Free space optics can be used in absorbance/transmission, fluorescence, reflection and Raman applications and are best deployed when the geometry between the light source and the spectrometer is defined and when these components are held in a rigid mechanical structure. Free space coupling offers higher light collection efficiency than optical fibers since free space does not suffer from insertion losses associated with fibers. Also, because free space optical coupling designs use fewer components (no fibers), they are well suited for low-cost, high-value OEM spectroscopic sub-assemblies.
